There are some very important moments in our life and often they are influenced by the society and the context where we grow up.

In Italy an important moment of our day is when we sit down at the table.

Although we are lovers of the mobile phones, the smartphones and so on, when we sit down at the table every mobile phone, computer and distraction – except the television-  are turned off.

Being at the table is holy for us.  If you are with some friends or relatives, it  is an important moment of life.

Staying at table it is an opportunity to talk, to be together, to share a jovial moment for the Italians.

Of course, eating is a pleasure for the Italians!

It will probably be for this reason that we spend a considerable part of our bank holidays (Christmas and Easter, not forgetting the mid-August) at the table.

If you try to phone an Italian, while he  is  eating, and he answers you for somehow (quite unlikely), he will stop you immediately, saying, “I am eating, we talk later?” The moment is sacred and it can not be interrupted.

The Sunday lunch is very different from the other days.
If during the week we are obliged to eat very fast, on Sundays we sit at the table and we enjoy the whole lunch. There’s no hurry.

A complete dinner or lunch in Italy includes appetizer first, main course, cheese, dessert and coffee.

For someone it may be a challenge to survival this kind of lunch .
We are talking about being able to finish 5 dishes.
The true Italian can face this “hard” trial with enough bravery and  he can be satisfy.

It is definitely unthinkable to have a lunch like Sunday during the work week for two reasons: there would be no time to eat all the 5 dishes, and especially how can you digest it?

We would have to ask to our boss for permission to take a rest and I do not think he would grant it easily.

In any case if you ever sit at a table with some Italians, you will be carried away  in  the pleasure of the food.
What about the propitiatory phrase? “Buon appetito” ,before starting to eat!
